PRINCIPLES / ORIGINS

Principles

Osteopathy is a complete manual discipline based on precise palpation sensations. Based on the notions of anatomy, biomechanics and global human functioning, the osteopath aims to free the structures in all their movement capacity to promote self-regulation.

Bone, muscle, facial, arterial, nerve, digestive and glandular structures are evaluated to offer a complete service and to preserve an integral vision of the human body.

Following a detailed questionnaire in relation to the patient's history, the osteopath analyzes posture, procedure and carries out specific manual tests in order to find the cause behind the present symptomatology.

The osteopath can act both in prevention and in acute cases. The intervention plans are personalized and aim to respond specifically to the needs of the patient in a relationship of trust.

Multidisciplinarity is advocated and the osteopath works with the medical team. The overall well-being of the patient is the main priority and the osteopath refers when needed.

Origins

The foundations of osteopathy were laid out by the surgeon Andrew T. Still in 1874 in the United States.

Osteopathy is practiced all over the world and is notably a recognized profession in the United States, Europe and Oceania.

In Quebec, osteopaths who have graduated from the CEO or COQ following training over 5 years must comply with the criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO) and be part of the order of Osteopathy Quebec .
